Sam Rohrer Press Conference on Real ID

This press conference, led by PA State Rep. Sam Rohrer, was held on June 16, 2008 in Harrisburg. Rep. Rohrer is the author of HB 1351, which would force PennDOT to stop the collection of biometric faceprints of PA drivers. That bill was referred to the IGA committee, whose chairman Rep. Curtis Thomas has refused to bring it to a vote. Instead, Rep. Thomas introduced HB 2537, a gutted version of HB 2537 with the langauge to stop biometric faceprints removed. That bill made it out of committee, and when it came to the floor for a vote, Rep. Rohrer introduced an amendment to reinsert the biometric langauge. That measure lost by a small margin. A group of Pennsylvanians are filing a class action lawsuit to stop PennDOT from obtaining their biometric faceprints without their informed consent.

Class Action Lawsuit against PennDot

For all Pennsylvanians who care about their privacy rights:

There is a class-action lawsuit underway against PennDot for stealing your identity. We are currently in the beginning stages, trying to get as many plaintiffs on our list as possible before filing this lawsuit. We currently stand at 317 and will be represented by the Law Office of Clymer & Musser in Lancaster, PA.

In the words of Rep. Sam Rohrer, from his press conference:

"Exactly two years ago, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania entered into a $45 million contract with Viisage Technology, self-described as 'the industry leader in instant issue digital driver's licenses.' Viisage, later renamed L-1 Identity Solutions, became responsible for issuing Pennsylvania driver's licenses.
